Attendance and absence
The only acceptable reasons for a student’s absence, without prior permission, are if they are ill or if there is an unavoidable domestic crisis. If your child is away, please let the School Office know the reason before 8.45 am on the first day. This should be by telephone to the attendance line, via the main switchboard (a message can be left outside of office hours) or by e-mail to attendance@beths.bexley.sch.uk for Year 7-11 and 6fattendance@beths.bexley.sch.uk for sixth form. Should the absence continue the school should be updated on the third day. For prolonged absences, or where there is a history of poor attendance, medical evidence may be required. When your child returns, please send them with a note to their Form Tutor.
We have an automatic communication system that will contact you directly, should your child be marked absent at morning registration without notification from you. This will ensure that the reason for the absence is known as soon as possible and alert you if your child is not in school when they should be. The system will contact the telephone numbers of those persons indicated on your child’s admission forms as having parental responsibility.
If your child needs to be absent for any reason – an interview, a hospital appointment, etc – they must ask their Form Tutor for permission before the event. When doing this they should always produce a letter from you or an appointment card.
‘Every Day Counts’ is Bexley Council’s strategy for improving school attendance which our Governors have adopted. Our attendance rates are consistently good at around 96%. However, this still means students on average still miss 9 school days per year and the overall rate could and should be better. Most of us enjoy good health and are ill for far fewer than 9 school days a year.
Interruption to school by holidays can cause a student’s progress to be seriously impeded. The policy of the Governors at Beths Grammar School, supported by Bexley Council, is that the Headteacher should not, except in exceptional circumstances, approve requests for holiday absence due to the negative effect such absence has on a student’s learning. Exceptional Circumstances do not include reasons such as the cost of the holiday, difficulties in parents getting time off in school holidays, or wanting to take an extended break around Christmas or Easter, in order to visit relatives on the other side of the World.
If there are truly exceptional circumstances, parents will need to write to the Headteacher making the case as to why an exception should be made. Clearly this needs to be before any holiday arrangements are booked.
Leaving School before 3.30 pm
A student who wishes to leave school early for some special reason, must ask their Form Tutor’s permission and produce a note from you and an appointment card, if available. They must then report to the School Office before leaving and sign out. They must sign in again when they return.
We do check all absences from school. If we are concerned or suspicious about an absence, we will contact you as soon as this situation becomes identified by us.
If we feel that the absence was not justified, or is unexplained, we will have to record it as an ‘unauthorised absence’. This will feature as one of the statistics that we publish and it will be recorded on a student’s report and in their main school file record. Such absences are usually reported in references and clearly reflect very badly on the individual concerned. In the unlikely event of a student truanting, we discuss the matter with their parents and sanction the student with detentions and may also set extra work.
Lateness
Any student who is late for school must report immediately on arrival to the School Office and sign the Late Book. If, in their Form Tutor’s opinion, they are late more than twice in a half-term without a genuine excuse, they will receive a detention on the third, sixth and ninth occasions to be served with the Deputy Headteacher on a Friday, directly after school.
Medical Condition or Allergy
Please keep the school up to date with information about any condition that could affect your child at school. Please see our Supporting Students with Medical Conditions Policy (in the About Us/Policies section of this website) for more details.
Illness at Home
On the first day of illness, please contact the school either by telephone (01322 556538) or email attendance@beths.bexley.sch.uk for Year 7-11 and 6fattendance@beths.bexley.sch.uk for sixth form.
Please do not send your child to school if they are ill and unlikely to be able to cope with the necessary challenges posed by a working day in a large school. Rest and swift recovery is the best policy.
If your child has had an infectious disease, or has been in contact with someone who has, please keep them at home until your doctor tells you they are clear: please also notify us directly at the school, in this important instance.
Illness at School
If your child is taken ill, or has an accident at school, they should go to the School Office. Should a quick recovery look likely, they will rest there. If, however, recovery that day seems unlikely, the Office Staff will contact you, so that they may be collected and taken home. In the rare event that your child should be taken to hospital, you will be informed as soon as possible. Your child should not phone you to pick them up without first reporting to the Office. If they do phone you initially, please ask them to report to the Office immediately.
So that we can contact you efficiently, it is essential that all parents/carers keep the School Office informed about where they can usually be reached during the day time. Please remember to inform us promptly if any of your contact telephone numbers change. Failure to do so will cause inconvenience and could cause stress and danger to your child.
Behaviour
We encourage the development of self-discipline in students, by making it clear what they must do and constantly encouraging them to do so.
We consider that good discipline comprises doing one’s best work, showing consideration for others, whilst co-operating with peers and always trying to be on one’s best behaviour.
School Rules
Several arrangements, which we wish to see adhered to, are mentioned in these notes. These are to ensure the efficient and effective operation of the School and to ensure its continued good reputation.
We do not make a large number of rules which tend to develop a legalistic, hair-splitting attitude and have to be frequently altered or added to. Instead, we trust students to have the common-sense to observe the reason for our four basic rules.
Do nothing that will endanger or inconvenience others
Do nothing that will endanger yourself
Do nothing which will detract from the good reputation of the School
Work to the best of your ability at all times
The Governors have drawn up a Home/School Agreement which we ask parents and students to sign as an acknowledgement of the partnership between home and school to provide the best education for your son. These Agreements will be issued to you in September.
Seeing that the rules are obeyed
School discipline is ultimately the responsibility of the Headteacher.
The authority is delegated to other staff, both teaching and non-teaching and, in routine matters, to Senior Student prefects. All reasonable requests and directions from staff and prefects must be obeyed.
In order to protect the reputation of the school in our wider community, this discipline must be accepted when students are on their way to school, whilst at school, or on the way home, when taking part in a school trip or journey, representing the school or taking part in any function, even loosely connected with the school.
If you have any worries about the way your son has been treated, please do not hesitate to contact the school directly, so that we can discuss the situation further with you, in an attempt to resolve the issue.
To view our Behaviour, Rewards and Support Policy please see the Behaviour, Rewards and Support Policy in the About Us/Policies section of this website.

School Uniform
Dress and Appearance
The school uniform is:

Summer Order (typically June and July):
- Students are not required to wear (or bring to school) a blazer or jacket
- Students are permitted to wear smart black or charcoal grey tailored shorts
- In the event that a student wishes a second layer, the second layer must be a blazer and not a coat or jumper.
It is essential that all clothing and property is clearly and permanently marked with the owner’s full name (not just initials).
This uniform is to be worn on all school occasions, including on Parents Evenings; on the way to and from school, on organised trips and journeys; and when representing the school in a team. The only exception is when the Headteacher or member of staff in charge specifically says that certain other clothing may be worn, such as ‘non-uniform days’.
All students are expected to be clean and tidy at all times. Any unconventional adornments, hair styles or clothing styles are not allowed. No jewellery, including earrings, is allowed other than a wrist watch. Hairstyles should be neat and tidy with no unconventional styles, colouring or patterns. Any other clothing (overcoats, anoraks etc) should be of a conventional nature and no clothing should have large labels or slogans attached. Hooded tops (‘hoodies’) are not allowed and students must not bring to school combs with metal teeth for health and safety reasons.
We have three preferred uniform suppliers who are able to supply all our required uniform and PE and games equipment at competitive prices. These suppliers are:
Matthews Schoolwear
33 Upper Wickham Lane, Welling DA16 3AD
Tel: 020 8303 1834.

Equipment
As well as any specialist equipment required in some subjects, the following checklist indicates what each student will need:
- Good quality pen with black ink and at least one spare pen
- Biro with green ink
- 2 pencils
- Coloured pencils (at least four in basic colours)
- Pencil sharpener
- Eraser
- USB Memory Stick
- 30cm rule, marked in mm
- 2 set squares, protractor, pair of compasses
- Calculator – available from Beths Stationary Shop in the LRC
- Headphones for use with our computers – available through the School Office
- Glue stick
- Small dictionaries (English and French/Spanish)
- No felt tip pens or correction fluid
Calculators
GCSE examinations have increased the already important role of the electronic calculator in mathematics teaching.
Many topics (not all) will be taught using calculators. Calculators will also be needed when students are involved with investigational work.
For the above reasons, the Mathematics department has asked that all students have the same calculator for ease of teaching. The model chosen is a Casio FX83GT+ which will be available to purchase through the School from the LRC.
Games and Physical Education
We consider that Games and PE are an essential element in any student’s education.
The kit is:
- PE Top: House colour
- Shorts: navy with school badge
- Trainers: white (as plain as possible)
- Rugby/football shirt: navy with white insert and school badge
- Football socks: navy blue
- Football boots
- Kitbag for Games and PE items
- Gum Shield and Shin Pads
- Long sleeved base layer top: navy (optional)
- Beths tracksuit (optional)
- Beths rain jacket (optional)
Please make sure that all kit is marked with your son’s name. His initials, about 5cm high, embroidered on a leg of each pair of shorts and the front left of the rugby and PE shirts, will help everyone in identifying clothing.
Please encourage your son to take a full part in Games and PE. The usual symptoms of wanting to avoid these activities are ‘forgotten kit’, ‘feeling sick’, ‘bad leg’ etc. If, however, your son has an illness or injury which you are sure makes the playing of games inadvisable, please make certain that he has a note from you, addressed to the PE Teacher, explaining the circumstances.
Students who are fortunate enough to be selected to represent the school, also have to accept the responsibility that this entails. We expect them to dress and behave correctly, both on and off the field, and to show loyalty to the team and to the school. This expectation also applies to out-of-school hours fixtures, including weekend events.
Sixth Form Dress Code
Dress and Appearance
Our Sixth Form students are role models for the entire school in every respect, including uniform.
Student attire must follow one of the following pathways:
- A suit jacket/blazer must be worn at all times around site, unless Summer Order is announced by the Headteacher.
- Lanyards must be worn and visible at all times. This is a safeguarding requirement.
- Students must wear either the school tie or the school badge at all times. Non-school ties are not permitted unless with permission of the Head of Sixth Form (county/international ties for example.) Students wearing a collared shirt must wear a tie.
- All students must wear a school tie on formal occasions.
- Plain jumpers are in addition to, not instead of, jackets/blazers. Hoodies are not permitted.
- Skirts/dresses must be of appropriate office environment length.
- Jeans, leather, suede, and leggings are not allowed.
- Office environment footwear must be worn. Office appropriate footwear is a formal shoe. This does not include trainers, Ugg boots, flip flops, high heels or crocs.
- Trainers are not allowed apart from during sporting activities.
- Make-up/jewellery/accessories must be discreet and subtle.
- Religious headwear is allowed, but faces must be visible. Other headwear is not allowed.
- Logos on all clothing must be discreet
- Leather jackets cannot be worn instead of suit jackets/blazers
- The dress code presented here is not an exhaustive list of items that are allowed and disallowed.
Students should approach their uniform with the intension of dressing smartly, as is they were attending a job interview. Where students are not taking this approach, but are not directly contravening the dress code, we will reiterate expectations and expect the issue to be corrected.
We reserve the right to send students home for breaches of the Sixth Form Dress Code.
