Department Vision

Business Education

Department Vision

This Business course introduces students to all they need to know about working in business, providing a solid foundation for further study.  With a focus on helping students to become good decision-makers, students learn essential managerial skills, alongside techniques to help them become analytical problem solvers. 

These skills are all highly sought after and valued in a wide range of careers.  Further study and career opportunities, if students would like to study business, finance or management at University, A Level Business, provides an excellent foundation.

Department Vision

Classical Civilisation will provide students with a broad, coherent and rewarding introduction to the classical world. 

It offers students the unique opportunity to study the literature, visual and material culture and thought of the classical world, as well as acquire an understanding of the social, historical and cultural context.

Computing

Department Vision:

The primary aim of the Computing Department is to provide students with the opportunity to embrace technology and inspire them within the subject. 

Our students enjoy learning about how computers function as well as the challenge of problem-solving, and this subject provides the perfect platform for them to discover their full potential within the area of Computer Science. 

Design and Technlogy

Department Vision

Our vision is to create an exciting and inclusive space where creativity, innovation, and critical thinking flourish. We aim to inspire students to become forward-thinking designers and skilled problem-solvers, who will shape the future with their unique ideas and technological skills.

The Design and Technology Department empowers students to confidently engage with a rapidly evolving technological world, making a lasting impact through thoughtful, innovative, and sustainable design.

Drama

Economics

Department Vision

Economics is a fascinating subject because it includes the study of how people behave and interact with each other. The dynamic between consumers, manufacturers and governments makes economics a vibrant topic. Economics can also lead to an exciting career. 

This course is designed to teach students to think logically and to use theories to understand how economics operates, and they will develop an economic awareness which will benefit them personally and professionally for years to come.   

Electronics

Department Vision

The Electronics Department gives students a hands-on introduction to the basics of electronic systems and circuits, building a strong foundation for future learning.

With a focus on developing problem-solving skills and creative thinking, students gain valuable experience in designing, analyzing, and creating electronic solutions.

Engineering

Department Vision

The Engineering Department is dedicated to cultivating a culture of innovation, creativity, and technical excellence. 

Our vision is to provide a learning environment where students engage with  technologies, design sustainable solutions, and address real-world challenges. 

We aim to inspire future engineers who are not only skilled at problem-solving but are also ethical and responsible leaders in their field, committed to advancing society through engineering.

English Language & English Literature

Department Vision 

Our vision is that all students acquire the skills to confidently articulate perceptive and sensitive written and spoken responses to ideas from a range of challenging and thought-provoking fiction and non-fiction texts. Units cover classic literary prose from the 19th and 20th centuries, Shakespeare plays, modern drama texts and poetry from different times and cultures. 

Students will develop their critical reading skills, writing extended analytical responses and are taught how to improve their creative writing skills and to write confidently for a range of purposes and audiences. Students in Years 7 and 8 also benefit from fortnightly ‘Let’s Think in English’ lessons that have been researched and designed by Kings College London to improve the thinking processes behind better writing.     

Film Studies

The Film Studies Department is committed to inspiring a deep understanding and appreciation of the art of cinema. Our vision is to foster a learning environment where students explore the complexities of film, from narrative construction to technical production, and understand their relevance to contemporary culture and societal issues. 

This Film Studies course introduces the essential elements of film analysis, production, and history, providing a solid foundation for further study. With a focus on critical thinking and creative storytelling, students acquire highly sought-after skills applicable to a wide range of careers, including filmmaking, journalism, marketing, and multimedia production. Our ultimate goal is to cultivate a passion for cinema and empower students to make meaningful contributions to the field and society at large.

Further Mathematics

Department Vision

The Mathematics Department’s primary aim is to help every student reach their full potential in mathematics, recognising that success is built on a partnership between parents, teachers, and students. Mathematics is both creative and practical, offering countless opportunities to explore and apply knowledge in meaningful ways.

The department focuses on teaching in real-world contexts, encouraging students to use their skills creatively through problem-solving and investigations. Teachers work to make lessons engaging by offering a variety of activities and experiences tailored to students’ needs and interests.

Through the school’s rewards system, the department celebrates achievements and sets personalised targets for each student, ensuring their progress reflects their abilities and aspirations.

Geography

Department Vision 

The Geography Department aims to motivate and involve students in world issues both in their immediate vicinity and globally. 

Geographers are charged with the tasks of viewing the world through two lenses: one being geophysical – studying the topography and physical landscape of our angry earth and the other being socio-economic – learning about the intrinsic importance of society and understanding how economic change can shape our lives. 

Topics are widely diverse, including the Antarctic, Development, Resource Management and Hot Desert. Issues such as inequality, globalisation and urbanisation are discussed in the hope that students better understand the need for a collective global citizenry to preserve our beautiful planet. At every Key Stage, we use GIS to promote IT in the subject and to weave core skills into the fabric of our curriculum.

Geology

The Geology Department is committed to inspiring a deep understanding and appreciation of the Earth’s processes and history. 

Our vision is to foster a learning environment where students explore the complexities of geological phenomena, from mineral formations to tectonic activities, and understand their relevance to contemporary issues such as natural resource management and environmental sustainability.

Government & Politics

Department Vision

A level Government and Politics aims to develop an informed understanding of the political structures in the UK and USA and show how they are rooted in political philosophy. Studying this will enable students to develop a critical awareness of changes in politics and the links between ideas, institutions and processes. Furthermore, students will become aware of the rights and responsibilities of individuals and groups. 

The assessment is based on an examination at the end of the two years, there is no coursework. Engagement with current affairs is essential to the success of the A Level. Politics can lead to a variety of careers from journalism and law to politics and teaching, as well as the charity sector and public administration.

Italian

Law

Department Vision

Law is a fascinating subject because it involves the study of how the legal system interprets and directs individual behaviour. It gives students an understanding of the role of Law in today’s society and raises students’ awareness of their rights and responsibilities, by learning about legal rules and how and why they apply to real life. 

Students also develop their analytical ability, decision-making, critical thinking and problem-solving skills – highly sought after by higher education and employers. Engaging topics such as Theft and Murder are clearly structured. If you’d like to study Law, Business, Finance or Management at University, A-level Law provides an excellent foundation. 

The skills you learn are also transferable across a broad range of subjects and careers.

Mandarin Chinese

The principal aim of the Mathematics Department is to maximise the development of the mathematical education of every student and realise that such learning is a partnership between parents, teachers and students. Mathematics is creative as well as functional. 

The Department aims to teach in a meaningful context, whilst providing opportunities for students to use their skills creatively through problem-solving and investigation. 

Each teacher endeavours to provide a variety of experiences and activities within the programme of study and during a lesson where possible. The Department uses and supports the rewards system, records achievements and sets targets for each student which relate directly to their ability.

The Philosophy Department helps students explore big questions about life, ethics, and knowledge, encouraging them to think deeply and critically about the world around them. The Photography Department is committed to inspiring a deep understanding and appreciation of the art and science of photography. Our vision is to foster a learning environment where students explore the technical, creative, and historical aspects of photography, and understand their relevance to contemporary culture and communication.

This Photography course introduces the essential elements of photographic techniques, visual storytelling, and image analysis, providing a solid foundation for further study. With a focus on critical thinking and creative expression, students acquire highly sought-after skills applicable to a wide range of careers, including fine art, media, advertising, and digital content creation. Our ultimate goal is to cultivate a passion for photography and empower students to make meaningful contributions to the field and society.

Physical Education

Department Vision 

The PE Department aims to inspire and motivate students to get involved in exercise, sports and activities, both in school and in later life. It is our ethos that students of all abilities are given the opportunity to develop physically, cognitively and socially through physical activity. 

Lessons are taught through different themes of learning where students can take part in a wide range of games and sports, working both individually and in teams. 

They will be taught how to improve their technical skills as well as evaluate how different tactics and strategies can be used to outwit an opponent. 

Students are also encouraged to engage in the competitive aspect of sport, where we have seen recent success at District, County and National Levels. 

PSHCE Education

Department Vision

Personal, social, health, citizenship and economics education is one of the most important subjects within the school as it teaches lessons for life and the values that students need to be successful in modern Britain and as global citizens. 

It also teaches students about important safeguarding issues and legal information to help students navigate the complexities of life in the 21st Century. 

We believe that there is no monopoly on life wisdom which is why all our form tutors participate in the delivery of this subject. We also believe that many of the subjects are best delivered by the pastoral teachers who know our students best.

 

Physics

Department Vision

The Physics Department is dedicated to fostering a profound understanding of the fundamental principles that govern the physical world and drive technological advancement. 

Our vision is to create a dynamic learning environment where students explore the laws of nature, from the smallest particles to the vastness of space, and understand their applications in solving real-world problems and advancing scientific knowledge.

Psychology

Department Vision

Among all the sciences, Psychology is the most mysterious subject of all. We aim to address the misconceptions and explain how it is a scientific study of human behaviour. Psychology is a bridge between philosophy and physiology where physiology describes and explains the physical make-up of the brain and nervous system, psychology examines the mental processes that take place within them and how these are manifested in our thoughts, speech and behaviour. 

The purpose of psychology is to give us a completely different idea of the things we know best. Psychology A Level assessment is based on an examination at the end of the two-year course; there is no coursework and a scientific way of thinking is essential to the success of the A level. Psychology can lead to a variety of careers from medicine to engineering, from social science to a career in education.

Religious Studies

Department Vision  

RE lessons are a safe place to explore our own beliefs and those of others in an environment of mutual respect. They are an opportunity to be open and honest about our thoughts and feelings to the bigger questions in life. We learn to listen to others and grow in empathy, maturity and responsibility. 

Together we explore the historical development of the major world faiths and how believers put their faith into practice in their daily lives. There is an appreciation of the spiritual and moral aspects of our lives and the impact we can have, for good or bad, on those around us and the environment we live in. We also understand how those of no faith approach ethical issues, such as euthanasia.

Science

Department Vision

The aim of the Department is to provide the foundations of the material world, the role of scientific understanding and its impact on our lives.  All learners are taught essential aspects of the knowledge, methods, processes and uses of science. The application of these in science is key and can be applied in its wider context in the complex and diverse world around us. 

 

Sociology

Department Vision 

The aim of the Sociology Department is to teach students the concepts, theories, and methods of Sociology. To introduce students to the basic social processes of society, social institutions and patterns of social behaviour and to train students to understand and to interpret objectively the role of social processes, social institutions and social interactions in their lives.
